As an integral part of Hovione's Innovation Strategy, the PhD program Alternative Applications of Continuous Twin Screw Wet Granulation was created and awarded a PhD in Business (BDE) scholarship.

Thus, under the terms of the” Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação Ciêntifica”, approved by “Lei nº 40/2004” amended by “Decreto-Lei nº 202/2012”, of 27th August, and amended by “Decreto-Lei nº. 233/2012, of 29th October and by “lei nº12/2013, of 29th January and “Decreto-Lei nº. 89/2013”, of 9th July (Research Grants Regulation of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT)), now in force (https://files.dre.pt/2s/2019/12/241000000/0009100105.pdf) a call for the selection of scholars and grant of an individual scholarship is open:

SCIENTIFIC AREA:

Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science.

WORK PLAN

Hovione investment on a Continuous Twin Screw Wet Granulation (TSWG) added complementary capabilities to the batch and continuous process trains. The TSWG module is designed to add a liquid (typically water; with or without a binder) to granulate the input material, mostly comprised of a crystalline API.Taking advantage of the reduced residence time during granulation, the first objective of the thesis is to ascertain whether it is feasible to wet granulate SDD materials as an alternative to dry granulation. Wet granulation for SDDs would allow bypassing disadvantages associated with dry granulation, specifically the loss of compactability and generation of fines. The second objective of the thesis will be to explore TSWG as a method to  to use liquid surfactants as binders both for the SDD and Crystalline Materials. The loading of excipients may also be explored to generate co-processed excipients. The third and last objective will be to test impregnation of mesoporous silica using the Twin Screws as an alternative method to the current standard of batch, solvent-based methods, with low throughput and large footprint.

WORKPLACE

The implementation of the program will take place at Hovione's premises, in close collaboration with Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon.

SUPERVISION
